About a month ago, VMware announced two new “VMware Ready” devices for their VMware Horizon Mobile software, although Apple iPhones are still yet to make an appearance in this list – this is still something I am very excited about. Firstly, because its an area where I am still technically upskilling and secondly because I see mobility as an area which is on the verge of exploding.
Switch to VMware with VMware Switch
Put simply, VMware Switch (not to be confused with a VMware vSwitch 🙂 allows multiple personalities or persona to exist on the same mobile hardware device.
Now think back to my post on the trends in storage and cloud computing for 2013, I noted at the time that VMware Horizon was opening up new doors to the mobile user, EUC as we know it is changing tremendously.
The possibilities could be endless.
Think segregation, think defined work schedules, think BYOD – Now as an avid user of BYOD myself (Apple Fanboy here) I truely am excited to see VMware extend their virtualization technology to mobile devices. Technology is fuelled by innovation, and to me this is innovation. Almost every IT/Technologist/Enthuiast has at least one mobile device. I sat on the tram the other day and was astonished (but not surprised) at at least 90% of the fellow passengers glued to their mobile device – Facebooking, tweeting, reading news, email etc All thirsty for information and social interaction.
Our mobiles no longer just serve the purpose of being able to phone and speak to someone, we make decisions on buying these mobile devices on other capabilities such as SMS, web browsing, email capabilities and social media access. Exciting times!!!
