They say that Innovation is key (among many other things) in business, only those who have the agility to change rapidly with the market and innovate quickly will survive.   And the team over at BDRSuite are innovating at an unbelievable pace – I wrote about their v5.3 version of their BDRSuite back in August where I commented on their speed of innovating even back then (You can read about that here) and not more than four months later here we are with their new release v5.5 GA.   While they have added a whole bunch of enhancements (including one that increases the time it takes to complete a backup by 2X),

Without further due, lets get stuck into what they have added from a new feature perspective:

Support for vSphere 8.0 Environments

VMware released vSphere 8.0 earlier this year, so probably the biggest new announcement with v5.5 is support for vSphere 8.0 – While there is no doubt a lot of customers that are still yet to upgrade to vSphere 8.0 – they can rest assured that when they do they will have a supported and fully compatible backup suite to protect their virtual workloads.

The 3-2-1 Backup Strategy with Google Cloud as a Backup Repository

The 3-2-1 backup strategy means you should have 3 copies of your production data, on 2 different types of media and 1 which is offsite, and given the number of security breaches (admittingly the breaches don’t always result in data loss) and ransomware attacks in the world right now, it is important as organisations continue to virtualise their mission-critical workloads, making the protection of that data becomes more essential than ever.

With the addition of Google cloud to be able to be used as a backup target, effectively enabling existing customers to align to the 3-2-1 backup rule and ensure they keep at least one copy of their backup data offsite.

Google Workspace (G-Suite) Shared Drive Data Protection

Google workspace is becoming increasingly mainstream – especially for organisations in the SMB space. As a competitor to Microsoft Office 365, Google workspace offers a similar suite of productivity tools for businesses to perform everyday tasks such as sending emails, video conferencing, document creation and team collaboration directly from Google cloud. As a collaboration platform, naturally, employees will be storing several company-sensitive documents in their shared drives – and while Google provides a level of redundancy and recoverability, they are not a backup company, making Vembu an easy decision when it comes to protecting those important documents.

Vembu now supports the ability to both back-ups to and recover Shared Drivers within the organisation’s Google workspace giving those companies using G-suite peace of mind.

ConnectWise Integration

As a fairly widely used IT service management system, the news that BDRSuite now supports ConnectWise Integration is fantastic. Allows customers to streamline and create service tickets automatically in ConnectWise Manage for backup-related activities resulting in faster SLAs.

Deduplication for Microsoft 365 User Mails

Reducing the size of a backup dataset will always be a good thing and eliminating common blocks within a backup dataset is one way to do just that. A common use case for emails that generate fairly big storage requirements is when one mass email (along with a large attachment) is sent to multiple inboxes across the organisation.  Through this new feature, rather than the same large email being stored multiple times taking up valuable space within an office 365 backup set, this can now be identified and significantly reduced thanks to the power of deduplication.

For those in the old, how to get to the new:

Before you hit the install button on the latest version of BDRSuite, please be aware that any BDRSuite deployments you are running in your environment that are below v5.0 should be upgraded to v5.0 first before upgrading to v5.5.0 GA.
