BDRSuite Version 7.0.1 goes GA!! Try it out today!! (Sponsored Post)

A new minor version release has been introduced by BDRSuite!  Version 7.0.1 goes GA, you can read the official blog here or continue reading to learn my thoughts.

Certainly the biggest enhancement in my eyes,  and given the context of my previous posts on ransomware – storing backups in immutable format onto Amazon S3 and other S3 compatible solution providers such as Wasabi.

Immutable Storage Backups

This integration significantly enhances the security of organisation’s backups, providing robust protection against the growing threats of ransomware and malware attacks.

By implementing immutability, BDRSuite ensures that their backup data remains unalterable and impervious to unauthorised modifications or deletions.

This proactive defense mechanism not only safeguards critical data from malicious tampering or altering but also mitigates the risk of accidental data alterations, thus bolstering the reliability and integrity of the organisation’s backup infrastructure.

Leaps and bounds in Linux Data Protection

Similiarly, the new Linux Hardened Repositories feature in BDRSuite offer a robust solution for organisation’s enabling immutability in Linux storage environments. By activating this feature, an organisation’s backup data becomes impervious to alteration once stored, enhancing the overall security and integrity of their data. This additional layer of protection significantly bolsters defenses against ransomware attacks, ensuring the safety of the organisations most critical information.

Again, in the linux space the KVM Full VM Recovery feature in BDRSuite provides comprehensive support for recovering entire virtual machines hosted on KVM hypervisors.

This capability maximizes efficiency in disaster recovery scenarios by allowing seamless restoration of virtualised environments to previous states. With KVM Full VM Recovery, the recovery process is simplified, enabling quick and effortless recovery of KVM-based infrastructure environments which is just awesome.

This enhances resilience and promotes business continuity by minimising downtime and ensuring the uninterrupted operation of virtualised environments.

Other notable enhancements in v7.0.1 GA:

Servers & Endpoints Management:

Users can now benefit from enhanced monitoring capabilities with the introduction of search and filters on the Data Source page. This allows for efficient tracking of Protection Status, Agent Status, and Version Details.

Protected Entities Management:

The update includes the ability to export the host list as a CSV file, along with new options for searching and sorting the list of protected entities. This streamlines management and facilitates better organization of protected resources.

SharePoint Online Backup:

Automatic backup for newly added sites is now enabled through the ‘All Sites’ Filter, simplifying the backup process and ensuring comprehensive coverage.

SharePoint Sites Restore:

Users now have the option to locally download backed-up Files & Folders from SharePoint Sites, providing greater flexibility in data restoration.

User Mailbox & OneDrive Restore:

Enhanced restore options allow users to include or exclude deleted items, providing finer control over data restoration processes.

Retention Reports for AWS and Azure Backup:

Users can now generate retention reports for backups stored in AWS and Azure, facilitating better management of backup data retention policies.

File-Level Recovery:

Improved functionality allows for search-based recovery of files or folders, enhancing the precision and efficiency of file-level recovery operations.

These enhancements collectively enhance the usability, efficiency, and flexibility of BDRSuite, empowering users with enhanced data protection and management capabilities.

VMware vExpert 2015 – what does it really mean to meVMware vExpert 2015 – what does it really mean to me

Short note to help promote and congratulate the latest vExpert 2015 awardees announcement, and a special welcome to new folk on the list. I am typing this on an iPad so grammar isn’t going to be a strong point especially because of IOS semi-intuitive autocorrect feature, I’ll try clean it up later.

The list has grown – tremendously and as I and other people have questioned the exponential growth of the list, I truly believe and trust the team at VMware is doing a fantastic job of making sure the people in the list belong in the list. I have been out of a “technologist” focused role for almost a year now so it has proven hard to find the time to return to creating fruitful and meaningful technical white papers, blog posts and posters. (Something I do miss)

But then that is what the good thing about the programme, and perhaps I needed to be reminded about. It is about contribution to the community and not the level you are technically contributing at – filling knowledge gaps where you can and putting your hand up and identifying when there is a gap in your own knowledge.

This is what makes the global VMware community special, and whilst I do think there are a lot of ego’s in this world – the one thing I have observed is for this community’s passion for helping others along their journeys.

It creates a virtual sense of family and whilst I and other long time vExperts compete through our chosen companies – I would never be led to believe this causes any friction or animosity towards each other when one is seeking help with a particular problem. That’s what makes this programme beneficial, not the free stuff you get with it, not the label or sense of title it gives you. It’s the people it connects you with- globally.

Restoring a IT Team’s most precious currency – Time. (Sponsored Post)Restoring a IT Team’s most precious currency – Time. (Sponsored Post)

In the world of data management and business continuity, where every bit of data is vital, and time is akin to a scarce resource, being a backup administrator within an IT operations team is a constant juggling act.

Balancing the imperative to keep data secure, and manageable as well as the necessity for quick recovery processes is a challenge that keeps those administrators on their toes.

Time is not just money; it’s the currency of productivity in their role and no doubt there are days when it feels like there’s never enough of it for these teams.

Over the years, I have seen the various versions of BDRSuite being released for many different environments – VMware, AWS EC2, Azure, Office 365 and Google to name a few, each meticulously developed with time savings at its core for those teams that are tasked with protecting those environments.

BDRSuite isn’t just a backup tool; it’s become an indispensable ally, promising not only enhanced data security but also a substantial reclaiming of a backup administrator’s most precious resource – time.

It allows IT operations teams to create and manage backup operations swiftly, without the headaches of convoluted processes. The time they used to spend grappling with confusing configurations, siloed datasets, or manual backup jobs can be redirected towards contemplating more strategic and innovative initiatives.

Take Instant Boot VM, which enables you to rapidly access backup data by instantly deploying it as a fully functional virtual machine in just a few minutes. By utilising this capability, the IT team can minimise downtime and guarantee seamless business operations by promptly making VMs accessible giving back precious amounts of time than manually restoring the data and testing the VM in the dev environment before trying to put it back into production.

Another example is the level of reporting that BDRSuite covers,  an easy way to find out if your backup jobs failed or not, and even during a recovery whether or not by providing information on all backup jobs that have been restored using full VM recovery from this relevant backup server. This saves you time by not having to log onto the backup server and auditing the backup log to see which jobs failed or succeeded. In addition, you can set up notifications and emailing of these reports to individuals or groups to be notified.

Another time saver is the granular recovery options it offers such as User Mailbox recovery (so you don’t have to restore a whole site to get just one mailbox recovered in say GSuite). Not only are you cutting down the restore process time, but you are also saving the time it takes to fish out the one item you need recovered after a full restore.

In addition to these features, one of the biggest things I think that sets BDRSuite apart is its prowess in automation. It takes the reins of routine operations, handling scheduled backups, managing errors, and optimising storage, all with minimal manual intervention from the human hand. This reduces the likelihood of human error and liberates those IT teams from the constant need for oversight. The result?  More freedom to focus on high-impact tasks that drive the organisation forward and to be more innovative (rather than reactive).

BDRSuite‘s automation extends beyond the initial backup process. It accelerates data recovery, simplifies reporting procedures, and provides real-time monitoring. This comprehensive approach contributes to a more efficient workflow, making troubleshooting a rarity and placing proactive enhancement of the overall backup strategy at the forefront of the IT team’s responsibilities.

In closing

BDRSuite goes beyond being a typical backup tool; it stands as a dynamic time-saving solution for backup administrators. Through the automation of routine tasks, the streamlining of user interactions, and the integration of a comprehensive set of robust features, the BDRSuite suite elevates the IT team’s efficiency.

This restoration of time paves the way for these teams to shift their focus to higher-order projects, providing the freedom to be innovative in the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of data management.
